About the Talk
William Cuffay, son of a former slave, was born on St Kitts in the Caribbean. He settled in Chatham where he became a journeyman tailor. But when the new tailors' union went on strike in 1834, he lost his job. A leading figure in the Chartist movement (Britain’s first popular mass political movement) he was transported to Australia for allegedly planning an uprising against the British government.
About the speaker:
Dr Jeremy Clarke is Education Officer for Medway Council’s Heritage Team. He gained his PhD at the University of Kent and has been in museum education for over 19 years.
