Public Health issues in the 19th century saw a flurry of Acts of Parliament to regulate burials in the United Kingdom. These Acts allowed for a rise in municipal cemeteries to cope with the critically overcrowded churchyards: especially in urban areas. Hence, for many of our ancestors, this saw the move away from the traditional burial in their parish churchyard to the municipal cemetery.

Canterbury Jewish Cemetery

Entrance behind 26 Whitstable Road Canterbury CT2 8DG access via their drive

Burials date from 1760.

The cemetery was in a state of decay in 2000 when the National Lottery granted funding that enable it to be tidied. It is now in the care of Canterbury City Council.

The cemetery is kept locked call Canterbury City Council on 01227 862000 to find the keyholder.

Canterbury, Wincheap Non-Conformist burial ground

Wincheap Road, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 3RY - next to The Kings Head public house.

Burials from 1849 - 1962

The responsibility for upkeep was taken over by Canterbury City Council in the 1950s.

The cemetery was vandalised quite badly but has since been repaired and become a sanctuary for wildlife.

Restricted and kept locked call Canterbury City Council on 01227 862000 for permission to access the site.

The monumental inscriptions have been transcribed and are available via the Kent FHS shop

Dartford - Bow Arrow Cemetery

This former cemetery in Bow Arrow Lane, Dartford served the former City of London Lunatic Asylum, later Stone House Hospital.

Managed by Dartford Borough Council, it is not open to the public.

Dartford - East Hill Cemetery, The Brent
