About the talk:
Claire has been researching the history of witchcraft and in particular the lives of women local to Maidstone who were the defendants at what is thought to have been the biggest witchcraft trial held in Kent. They were ordinary single or widowed women, some working as midwives or healers, but without anyone to speak up for them they were found guilty and condemned to death by hanging.
About the speaker:
Claire Kehily is a Maidstone councillor representing Coxheath and Farleigh Ward. She has been campaigning to have a lasting memorial to the six women who were convicted of witchcraft on Penenden Heath in 1652.
