About the talk:
Howard will tell the history of fire fighting in Kent from before the Roman invasion in 43 AD, when he suggests that true fire fighting started in the county. Taking us through the next two millennia of equipment and customs during which time our ancestors must often have wondered if fire was man's friend or enemy.
About the speaker:
Howard Myers, a former Kent fire fighter, was born and went to school in Canterbury before entering training with Kent Fire Brigade aged 16. His career with Kent Fire Brigade spanned 23 years during which time he saw service in, Kent, Central and East London, and achieved the rank of (Temporary) Divisional Fire Officer. In 1968 he was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery, Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation for Bravery and, in 1984, the Queen’s Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct medal. After leaving the Kent Fire Brigade he followed a career in Fire prevention, health and safety at home and abroad and still runs his own business as a Fire risk assessor. He is also heavily involved with the Kent Firefighting Museum at Ash near Sevenoaks
