About the Talk: This talk will explore the works of Susie Colyer Nethersole (1869-1956), the author of 8 novels set in East Kent, and consider the ways in which she wrote about the Kentish landscape. Her attention to detail is finely observed through weather and the changing seasons. Her stories show a tough grittily realistic rural life for her characters, who struggle as well as thrive, as modernity threatens their traditions. It's her "warts and all" portrayal of Kent's rural past that marks her out as more than just a writer of romance fiction.
About the Speaker: Dr Michelle Crowther is an Academic Librarian at Christ Church University Canterbury and co-lead of the Kent Maps Online project. Her research interests include Victorian and Edwardian literature, manuscript magazines, biography, rural writers, and 19th century Canterbury.
