Short History of the School:
Ashford County School for Girls was established in the Ashford Assembly rooms in 1904 as the first state school in Ashford. It was at first only open to fee paying girls or those who had won a scholarship. Although, a secondary school a few girls were allowed entry as young as 7 years. As pupil numbers grew over the next 24 years the school underwent a series of moves. It first moved to Dover Street, then Station Road before finally settling, in 1928, on the current site at Maidstone Road Ashford.
The school was renamed Ashford Grammar School for Girls in 1944 and, from 1947, only accepted girls of 11 years and over. In 1973 the school changed its name again to Highworth Grammar School for Girls and accepted students from 13 years onwards. In 1990 the age of entry was returned to 11 years.
Today Highworth Grammar School is a selective secondary school allowing entry to boys from the 6th form.
