About the Talk
The first Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports was appointed in the 13th century by King Edward I. Over the centuries the Lord Warden has also been known as Keeper of the Coast, Admiral of the Cinque Ports, and Constable of Dover Castle. These titles gave Lords Warden responsibility for the defence of the Kent and Sussex coast, and powers in appointing MPs, regulating maritime business, including pilots, shipwreck and goods salvage.
