The Inaugural Meeting of Kent Family History Society - 28th June 1974
The inaugural meeting of the society was held at 8:00 pm on 28th June 1974 in an upstairs back room of The County Hotel, High Street, Canterbury (now Canterbury ABbode Hotel).
Mr Royston F. Gambier – Organising Secretary, gave the opening address after he had thanked Cecil Humphery-Smith, and Patrick Loftus, for their assistance and enthusiastic encouragement, and Duncan Harrington and Colin Parry, for their invaluable contribution to the organising of the Kent Family History Society.
In his address he said that the aims of the Society are based on those that are being pursued by the fourteen other Family History Societies which already exist. They all started with a small nucleus of enthusiastic members, but due to the ever increasing interest that is being shown in Family History, Genealogy, Heraldry and their allied subjects, most can now boast membership figures that are counted in the hundreds.

The 32 members present approved the name of the new society as, ‘Kent Family History Society’.
Elected the Society's founding committee and agreed subscription fees plus the eleven basic rules of the Society.
Mr Humphrey-Smith gave a short talk entitled 'CLOTHING THE FAMILY SKELETON' about the way in which to start tracing a family history and suggested suitable reading material for the beginner. A transcript of this talk may be read here.
