The History of Milton Regis 1850-1960 - Book Launch

5th October 2026

A new book on the history of Milton Regis 1850-1960 by Helen Allinson (KFHS member 333) will be launched at:

  • Sittingbourne Library on Tuesday 27th October 10am until 12noon, and
  • Milton parish church on Saturday 31st October 10am until 12noon

Little of Milton Regis today would be recognisable to anyone who lived there a century ago. Only the High Street and the Court Hall would be familiar, for the narrow streets with the workshops and yards behind the shops are gone. The creek, which is an inlet of the Swale, was an overwhelming presence to the inhabitants, where so many earned their living. Now it has become distant with the filling in of part of it and the building of Mill Way. Miltonians no longer live on its banks. The sailing barge traffic is gone and with it the bustling wharves of the port which were so important in earlier centuries. The old streets around the creek were demolished years ago and the farmland which surrounded the town is covered in housing much of which is built on marshland.

It is a substantial book with comprehensive index and illustrations and is published by Sittingbourne Heritage Museum.

The book will be available to purchase online
