The Hedley Peters and Sons of Sittingbourne archive is now available online for members.
The Records from Hedley Peters and Sons auctioneers, valuers and estate agents of High Street Sittingbourne c 1876-1960 were copied with the permission of Dr R Baxter and the Sittingbourne Arcaeological Group.
The records were published in 1986 and are now held by the Kent Library and History Centre, Maidstone.
A couple of interesting notes include:
On 7th October 1904 Ernest PACKHAM of Clifton Villa, Sittingbourne & High View Ramsgate insured his Baby Peugeot 5HP car, made in June 1904.
It cost him £200 and the premium was £5
The next person to insure a car was Osborne Aymer VALLANCE of Macknade, Faversham who insured a Sunbeam 10/12HP car also made 1904, which had cost him £450, the premium was £8/10- (£8.50). The 1911 census for Macknade indicates that he was a 46 year old retired brewer.
