Unfortunately our previously advertised speaker for the September Meeting had to withdraw. Instead, Michael Lucas give an illustrated talk based on the diary of Captain George Pirie, a Regimental Medical Officer.
Pirie saw much service on Gallipoli, where he was wounded, and on the Somme, and at Ypres, where he was killed in 1917. Unlike so many accounts, written long afterwards, distorted by failing memory or hindsight, this is fresh and tells how things were and how they were perceived at the time.
Pirie was a keen and sympathetic observer of his comrades, both officers and men. There was ever present danger in the front line, but good comradeship in and out of the line. Amongst hardship and death was much bravery, and even occasional humour.
