Geoff gave an illustrated talk to bring to life Bodiam, that exceptionally beautiful Sussex castle with Its high walls surrounded by a picturesque moat.
It was built by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge in the late 14th century, in the dark day following the Black Death and Peasants’ Revolt. Sir Edward had amassed much loot fighting in France. But by now the French were raiding our south coast. Bodiam was built both for defence and for show, but was never attacked by the French. Geoff described the comfortable life the owners would have had.
After the mid 17th century, the castle was neglected and fell into ruin. By 1822, it seemed destined to be demolished for road metal. However, ‘Mad Jack’ Fuller, squire of Brightling, an especial hero of Geoff’s, saved the day, by buying it and repairing it. His work was completed 100 years later by Lord Curzon, who then presented it to the National Trust, who open it to the public.
