Popular local family historian Peter Ewart, took us for 'A stroll along the Nailbourne valley.'
'Nailbourne' is the Kentish term for a stream that runs intermittently. The one Peter described runs, when there is sufficient rainfall ( and for some years it may virtually disappear) , from Lyminge along the Alkham valley before joining the Stour. When it runs, it supposedly foretells disaster, and can certainly bring flooding.
With many interesting illustrations, both old and contemporary, Peter showed us the numerous places of historical and other interest to be seen if one follows the Nailbourne. Along the way one can encounter reminders of such diverse characters as St. Ethelburga, Joseph Conrad, Lord Kitchener and one of the Dambusters.
