Our Branch AGM was held this evening, chaired by the Society's Chairman David Wood. It was quite a routine AGM with no changes to the branch committee.
After the meeting David spoke to us about the Battle of Bossendon Wood in 1838 and the part his ancestor Henry Hadlow had played.
It was a time of much unrest amongst agricultural workers who feared for their jobs as farming methods were starting to become mechanised. A number of agricultural workers, led by John Thom (under the pseudonym Sir William Courtenay) clashed with the militia resulting in the deaths of nine of the protestors and two militia men.
