Joe Browne's time in WWI came to an abrupt end at the 1916 Battle of the Somme. He was determined his sons would not fight in the "Trenches" in WWII. When he saw an advert for a Met Air Observer he possibly thought it would be a cushy option for his youngest son Basil. Far from it.
Basil, aged just 18, crashed on Dartmoor on Christmas Day 1943 in a USAAF B-17. This talk describes the Weather War he took part in and describes the amazing circumstances around the crash and the aftermath.
