It was surprising how many famous writers have Kent connections. In his interesting and informative talk Geof Doel told us about a number of them. People with familiar names such as; H.E.Bates, H.G.Wells, Vita Sackville- West, Jane Austin, T.S. Elliot and of course Charles Dickens.
Dickens used his surroundings a lot in his novels and we were guided to recognising people and places in his writings, usually re-named.
Canterbury featured a lot with tales of Chaucer (who had been M.P. for Greenwich) and his characters, Christopher Marlowe (who attended The Kings School) and Richard Lovelace. There were also a few less well-known writers mentioned such as Ryman the Canterbury Friar poet.
