After the branch AGM Nick Smith gave a presentation Sandwich Then & Now
Sandwich is one of the most complete Medieval towns in the whole country. Nick used current video footage, shot in various parts of Sandwich, and interspersed it with historic photographs of the town.
This talk centred on the Cattle Market in central Sandwich and the Quay and River Stour to the north. Many of the buildings in Sandwich have been around for centuries but their uses have changed over the passage of time. Sandwich used to have many more pubs, inns and licenced premises in days gone past and there were numerous businesses and trades that no longer exist. Frequently, the photographs evoked memories of changing times, family names and events, including the freezing of the River Stour in 1963.
Time was limited because of the AGM but Nick has looked at several other areas of Sandwich including King Street, New Street and the Rope Walk.
