James Constantine Coastguard.,Portsmouth to Sandgate

Tuesday 8th May 2018, 19:30-21:30
Sheila Harris

For this month our speaker was Sheila Harris who talked about the life of one of the Constantine family. Sharing some of the quirks and coincidences that have come out of research into the maternal line of James Constantine's family which is primarily based in and around the local East Kent area.

James Constantine was born in Ireland, travelled the world having enlisted in the Navy in 1865, and on completing his service became a Coastguard. His postings whilst in that service brought him to Kent, his final one being at Sandgate where he remained for the rest of his life.

From searches of local newspaper reports it is clear he was well regarded by the local community. He died in 1935, some 40 years after arriving in Sandgate, at the age of 85yrs and his wife died just 48hrs later at the age of 75yrs.
