Canterbury - outdoor meeting

St Nicholas

Canterbury branch committee member Leanne Jones organised a visit for members to her parish church. She gave a short talk about the history of Thanington, St Nicholas a Norman church with 13th century additions, renovated in the 19th century by William Butterfield.

Leanne then led those who wanted to up the Bell Tower to visit the ringing chamber. A couple of our fitter members also made it up the ladder into the belfry to see the bells. Leanne has recently joined the bell ringers at the church. She has reached the stage in her training that she can now visit other churches when they are short of a band member. She answered questions about bell ringing and said she became interested in becoming a campanologist after tracing an ancestor, a watchmaker by trade, who was also a bell ringer.

Refreshments were on offer in the parish room.

An interesting afternoon.
