This talk was mainly about etiquette and table manners in mediaeval times which are very different from the popular perception.
We learnt how food was displayed, served and eaten. The principal guest was seated on a slightly raised table – hence the ‘high’ table. Men and women dined separately. Diners were in pairs and shared a platter with four people sharing a goblet of wine. If there was fresh bread the top piece was reserved for the principal guest – the ‘upper crust’. As they ate with their fingers there was constant handwashing.
This was a very enjoyable and interesting talk.
