A very good turnout for this meeting and a chance for branch members to personally meet David Wood, our KFHS chairman.
David also gave the talk about the battle which took place in 1838 at Bosenden Woods near Hernhill in which one of his ancestors, Henry Hadlow, was involved. It was a period of agricultural unrest and the local people were stirred up by the charismatic Sir William Courtenay who was really John Tom the son of a Cornish maltster. This culminated in Tom shooting dead a constable who had been sent to arrest him. Soldiers were sent from Canterbury and a battle ensued resulting in the deaths of Tom, eight of his followers and two of those sent to arrest him.
A lively story made more interesting by the family facts.
