Churchill’s auxiliary units were the ‘secret army’ that was formed to help counteract an invasion during WW2, much of it based in Kent.
Jim Gascoyne (our speaker) told us that the ‘secret army’ was so secret that a husband and wife could belong to diferent units and not know. If specialists were needed to dig a bunker they were selected from out of the area and driven in under cover of darkness so that they couldn’t tell anyone where they had been.
Some bunkers are still in existence today although most are so well hidden that no one knows where they are. Jim said that there is one very close to the Ashford area that is currently being restored.
A really enjoyable and informative talk about a subject of which little is known.
