About the Talk
What it was really like to be in domestic service? TV series, such as Downton Abbey, paint a fairly rosy picture of service. In this talk Ian will tell us what servants' lives and jobs were really like.
About the Speaker
Ian Porter is a novelist, historian and walks guide in London. He studied 19th Century Urban Poverty in England at the University of Birmingham and was awarded the Chancellor’s Prize for outstanding achievement. He is currently the owner of London Town Walks and is a highly regarded public speaker and writer on the Victorian East End. He is the author of the highly acclaimed Whitechapel, set amidst the 1888 murders, whilst his second novel is set in the world of suffragettes.
