Brians DNA test told him he was matched to a cluster of people in Canada. Brian discovered a relevant Canadian family tree and recognised that there was a direct ancestor on the Canadian side called Mary Day, who was born in 1879.
He had a relative Mary Day born in 1875. The death registration of Mary Day in Canada gave her birth date as 8th Oct 1879, father as Franklin Day and the place of birth as Lydd in Kent.
None of these facts agreed with the information Brian knew about the Kent Mary Day.
Under normal circumstances further investigation would be dropped, but the DNA made it certain there was a link and no other person was likely.
