About the talk: Without its horses, London in 1900 would have ground to a halt – no buses, no deliveries, no goods trains. This talk is an eye opener to what is still there - the mews, horse hospitals, cab shelters and drinking troughs - with what is less apparent today - like the horsepower each bus route needed, and why flogging a dead horse wasn't just a turn of phrase. As the internal combustion engine fired up and the Great War loomed buildings survive that evidence this extremely abrupt transition. All this is brought alive through painters like Robert Bevan and early photographs.
About the speaker: As a London walking tour guide and lecturer, Charlie Foreman highlights the social, architectural and artistic history of his home city about which he is passionate. He is a member of the City of Westminster Guide Lecturers Association, his talks focus on the forces that have shaped and changed this multi-faceted metropolis and the artistic and cultural heritage that this has given us.
