POOR LAW RECORDS for MID-KENT. Transcripts of Settlement Certificates, Bastardy Bonds, Removal & Settlement Examinations, etc Nearly 19,000 records in SURNAME order
INTRODUCTION
This publication is a transcription of Settlement, Removal and Bastardy Records that have survived amongst parish collections held at the Centre for Kentish Studies and Medway Studies Centre. The area covered is broadly the Poor Law Union areas of Gravesend & Milton, Hoo, Strood (or North Aylesford), Medway, Milton, Hollingbourne, Maidstone, Malling, Tonbridge, Cranbrook and Dartford (for parishes where records are held at Maidstone or Medway). A few parishes from other Union districts are included: These are shown in italics in the list in the following paragraph. In a few parishes details of apprenticeships have also been transcribed.
The parishes for which records, but not necessarily all records, have survived and are included in this publication are: Ashford, Aylesford, Birling, Bobbing, Borden, Boughton Aluph, Bredgar, Brenchley, Broomfield, Burham, Chart Sutton, Chatham, Cliffe, Cobham, Cranbrook, Darenth, Dartford, East Farleigh, East Malling, East Peckham, East Sutton, Fairfield, Farningham, Frindsbury, Frittenden, Hadlow, Harrietsham, Hartlip, Hawkhurst, Headcorn, Hoo - All Hallows, Hoo - St. Mary, Horsmonden, Horton Kirby, Ightham, Lamberhurst, Leeds, Lenham, Linton, Lower Halstow, Luddesdown, Maidstone, Marden, Meopham, Mereworth, Mersham, Milton Regis, Murston, Offham, Rainham, Rochester - St. Margaret's & St. Nicholas, Shorne, Southfleet, Speldhurst, Staplehurst, Stoke, Stowting, Teston, Tonbridge, Trottiscliffe, Upchurch, Wateringbury, West Farleigh, West Malling, West Peckham, Wrotham.
The records are listed alphabetically by SURNAME and also contain PARISH, ARCHIVES REFERENCE , DOCUMENT NUMBER, TYPE OF RECORD (See following page for Glossary) YEAR OF EVENT and DETAILS including full dates where given.
The transcription of these records has been carried out by members of the Society over at least the past 15 years, and it cannot be guaranteed that they have all been checked to the Society's normal high standard. Reference, therefore, should always be made to the original record held at either the Centre for Kentish Studies or Medway Studies Centre, almost entirely on micro-film. The reference number for which appears in each record. This publication does not cover all of the County and includes only records surviving in parish collections, not Poor Law records that are to be found amongst other sources such as Quarter Sessions, Petty Sessions and records of the Overseers of the Poor. All of these sources and Settlement and Removal records from the parish collections, are indexed in Gillian Rickard's, East and West Kent Settlement Indexes c/o Gillian at 99 Strangers Lane, Canterbury, Kent CT1 3XN.

Parish Registers
Vol. 3
This publication incorporates 'The Mary Wigan Transcripts' which were first published as micro-fiche but then withdrawn because of quality problems with the hand-written documents. Some parish records have been expanded from other sources
Many of the sections are for Marriages only and some cover only short periods. However, there are a total of over 121,000 records from parishes all over Kent. (95 in all)
The format used is Adobe Acrobat 6, the latest issue. This has a more advanced 'search' facility and it is possible to search all 121,000+ entries for names of interest in one operation!
The following records are included: (C = Christenings, M = Marriages, B = Burials, Bns = Banns)
